Applin is an Apple Core Pokemon from Generation 8. It is a Grass/Dragon-type Pokemon that inhabits trees, and is known for its diverse evolutionary chain.

While Applin might look like an apple fruit at first glance, it’s actually not its real form. You see, according to its Pokedex entries, this Pokemon immediately burrows inside an apple as soon as it’s born.

While inside the apple, Applin uses the fruit as its food source and protection from predators. In other words, the apple in its body is a real fruit that covers its whole body except its eyes and tail.

Applin is apparently proficient at maximizing the benefits of eating berries based on its two main abilities, Ripen and Gluttony.

Ripen makes using berries twice as effective, while Gluttony increases the minimum HP threshold needed for a Pokemon to consume berries in battle.

Applin also has a hidden ability called Bulletproof, which allows it to be immune from moves that produce ball and bomb-like projectiles, like Electro Ball, Bullet Seed, and Sludge Bomb.

As a tree-dwelling Pokemon, you can find Applin in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet if you look close enough at the trees found in the following locations:

  • Tagtree Thicket
  • Casseroya Lake
  • North Province (Areas One and Two)
  • East Province (Areas One and Two)
  • South Province (Areas One, Two, and Four)
  • West Province (Area Three)
  • Apple Hills (Kitakami)

Finding a tree with a hanging Applin on it is a rare encounter, but you can increase the chances of seeing one by eating sandwiches and meals that enhance your encounter power level on Dragon-type Pokemon.

You can also eat foods for encountering Grass-type Pokemon, but we highly recommend that you go for the Dragon-type, since Applin is usually found in places that are already filled with Grass-type Pokemon.

In the DLC, it’s easy to capture multiple Applin in the apple trees of Kitakami’s Apple Hills and Mossfell Confluence.

As you can see on the screenshots above, we were able to find several trees in the Tagtree Thicket with Applin hanging on their branches. Make sure you zoom in your character when looking at the trees by pressing R3.

Once you spot an Applin, you can engage it in a battle by throwing a Pokeball on it or shaking the tree to make Applin fall from above.

Like most Pokemon, you can easily capture Applin if you have a Pokemon that knows the move False Swipe.

Evolving Applin into Dipplin is a bit different from the other evolution forms, since you will need to go to the Kitakami region, which is only accessible in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC.

If you already have the DLC, go to the Mossfell Confluence (southeast of Mossui Town) and search for a hut beside a small apple farm.

This hut has a shop (without a shopkeeper on it) that sells the item called Syrupy Apple. Buy the item and use it on Applin.

Of all the Applin evolutions, Dipplin is the only one who can evolve. As soon as it learns the TM226 Dragon Cheer, it becomes a Hydrapple–a decent bulky Pokemon with high HP, Defense, and Sp. Attack.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know where to find Applin in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you should start checking more boxes on your Pokedex by acquiring its other evolution forms as well.

Evolving Applin is fairly easy in the game, since its evolution items are readily available at the Delibird Presents and if you have the DLC installed.

The most powerful Pokemon that you can train from the Applin evolution chain is arguably Hydrapple.

When training a Hydrapple, consider getting maximum EVs for Special Attack, so you can maximize the effect of Dragon Cheer and other strong moves like Draco Meteor.
